The Times, 28th December 2024: UK Government Announces £6.6bn in Grants and Cheap Loans to Accelerate Solar Energy Plans.
The Times newspaper reports that the will come from the government's £6.6bn warm homes plan and is due to be allocated in the 2025 spending review. Under the scheme, fuel-poor households will receive upfront grants to cover installation costs, while more affluent households can access low-interest loans, repayable through savings on electricity bills. Additionally, the government is considering increasing payments for excess electricity sold back to the grid, enhancing the financial benefits for participants.
The UK government has announced a £6.6 billion initiative to accelerate the adoption of solar panels across the country. This program will provide grants and affordable loans to millions of households, aiming to boost solar capacity from the current 16.6GW to approximately 45-47GW by 2030.
This initiative is part of the government's broader strategy to meet its 2030 clean energy commitments, which include installing 600,000 heat pumps annually by 2028. By expanding solar capacity, the government aims to reduce household energy costs, decrease reliance on agricultural land for solar projects, and advance towards its climate targets.
Advancements in solar technology and battery storage have made solar energy a more viable and attractive option for homeowners. The government's investment seeks to capitalize on these developments, promoting energy independence and contributing to the UK's goal of becoming a clean energy superpower by 2030.
Reacting to this news, David Morley, Director of Marketing for SUNGO Energy UK, states: "We very much welcome this announcement and, whilst full details of how the initiative will work will follow, it can only be a major boost for the solar energy sector in the UK. As a growing, global player, SUNGO Energy established its UK operation this summer and we see this as a significant opportunity to increase our market share. SUNGO Energy is probably best known for its Smart Solar Power Optimisers with Rapid Shutdown, which increase solar PV energy generation performance by up to 30%, but we are also seeing a great deal of interest in our broad and highly cost-efficient range of Battery Energy Storage Systems."
